Chinese Fishing Nets
The huge cantilevered Chinese fishing nets that droop towards the waters like over-sized hammocks have become a hallmark that represents Fort Kochi on the tourist map. Once just a fishing accessory, it is now a big bait for tourists.
The nets are set up on teak and bamboo poles and each net is operated by at least 6 fishermen. The sight of these fishing nets suspended in mid-air against the backdrop of azure waters and clear blue skies make for a spellbinding experience.

Dutch Cemetery
Walk a few meters down the road from the St Francis Church and you will walk into the beautiful Dutch cemetery running parallel to the golden sandy beaches and overlooking the gorgeous blue waters of the Arabian Sea. Constructed in the 18th century, it is considered as one of the oldest cemeteries in India.
The brilliant Dutch architecture of the place is an attraction among tourists and serves to lend the place an elegant air. Most of the tombstones are made of granite and red laterite and appear as a stark contrast against the rest of the complex. Set against the backdrop of lush green surroundings and virgin environs, the cemetery offers a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday city life.

Mattancherry Palace
Mattancherry Palace stands as a replica of the majestic pre-colonial and colonial era of Kochi and Kerala. In spite of being constructed by the Portuguese rulers, Mattancherry Palace is also known as the Dutch Palace, owing to the renovations done by Dutch rulers after they took over the kingdom.
The museum part of the palace houses gorgeous artefacts and belongings of the royal house of Kochi. History enthusiasts will have a lovely day here, exploring the cultural history of Kerala. Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica
Constructed by the Portuguese and now considered as one of the most magnificent places to visit in Fort Kochi, the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica is one of the eight Basilicas in India. The basilica serves as the cathedral church of the Diocese of Cochin and is visited frequently by devotees of Christianity because of the same.

St Francis Church
The St. Francis Church, well-known for its beautiful architecture and ambience, is believed to be one of the oldest churches built by the Europeans in India. The famous explorer Vasco da Gama, the first Portuguese sailor to reach the shores of Kerala, died in 1524 during his third visit to Kochi. He was buried in this Church. After 14 years, his body was taken back to Portugal.
Legend has it that the remains of great explorer Vasco de Gama were buried in the church before being shipped off to Lisbon after 14 years. The gravestone of Vasco de Gama is a popular tourist attraction, along with the cenotaph erected in 1920 in memory of Kochi residents that died in World War I.
Architectural enthusiasts also visit the church to admire the eminent structure with its European style, and quaint, old-world charm.

Paradesi Synagogue
The Paradesi Synagogue is more than a hundred years old and houses many rare antiques. The synagogue, that woos many visitors, adds to the quaint charm of Mattancherry. The Jewish synagogue was built in 1568, almost 1500 years after the beginning of the Jewish connection with Kerala. It was built on the land, adjacent to the Mattancherry Palace, given by the erstwhile king of Cochin.
The inside of the building is marvelling in itself – the spacious halls, rare and enchanting antiques on display, magnificent chandeliers glittering in the sun, large windows that filter in crisp yellow sunlight. The entire place is covered with hand-painted blue willow patterned tiles and stepping into the hall will transport you to an entirely different world.
The carved teak arches are spectacular to behold and a special oriental rug gifted by the last king of Ethiopia can also be seen hanging.

Willington Island
Willingdon Island is one of the largest artificial man-made islands in India. Named after the Viceroy who commissioned its construction, Lord Willingdon, the island is well connected to the mainland by the Venduruthy Bridge.
The presence of the Mattancherry and Ernakulam wharfs on either sides was an important contributing factor in its growth as an important trading centre in Kochi. At present, the island houses the modern port, many important offices, hotels and buildings including that of the Southern Naval Command and the Cochin Port Trust.

Indo Portuguese Museum
The Indo-Portuguese Museum, located within the premises of the Bishop's House, displays various artefacts collected from different churches. The museum, preserves the rich heritage of Indo-Portuguese culture, art and architecture in Kerala, owes its origin to Dr Joseph Kureethra, the erstwhile Bishop of Kochi.
The museum is located amidst the gardens of the Bishop's house and elegantly echoes the heritage of one of the first Catholic community in India. The place is adorned with vestments, silver processional crosses and altarpieces of the Cochin diocese. The whole museum is divided into five main sections namely, Altar, Procession, Treasure, Civil Life, and Cathedral. The names of the sections agree with the outstanding collection they display. At the basement of this museum is situated Fort Emmanuel, providing an enchanting spectacle.

Indian Naval Museum
The Maritime Museum in Kochi is an ode to the glorious past of the Indian Navy. Located on the INS Dronacharya, the museum throws light on the genesis, history, evolution and landmarks of the Indian Navy. The Navy’s origins in Surat along with features on shipbuilding are particularly popular attractions here.
Some of the exhibits showcase Vasco da Gama’s journey from Europe to India and his subsequent settlement here and also maps that trace the journey of other European maritime travellers. There is also an oil painting of San Gabriel, da Gama’s flagship that brought him to the Beypore harbour.
One can also learn about the trade links of the Indus Valley Civilisation with the Arabs, Portuguese and Dutch. Furthermore, there is a section called “Navy in Action” which is dedicated to the contributions of the Indian Navy post India’s independence and during subsequent wars with neighbouring countries.

Aspinwall House
Aspinwall House happens to be a 19th-century building that stands proudly overlooking the sea as a noble reminder of its past. It has a rich history that extends beyond its role in the biennale, however. The mansion was initially built as a private residence for the legendary trader, John Aspinwall and his family in order to set up his business, Aspinwall & Co. It was one of the earliest enterprises on the Malabar coast of south India.
The house was constructed using a mix of Indian and European architectural styles, reflecting the cultural influences that were present in Kochi at the time. This colonial mansion was later used for a variety of purposes, including as a warehouse for spices and other goods, as a godown for shipping operations, and as a hotel. Apart from the exports of goods, the company was also said to be in the business of boat-making.

Cherai Beach
Cherai Beach, which is one of the best-voted beaches of the state, is situated at a distance of 30 km from Kochi city. Its strategic location on the northern end of the Vypin Island in Kochi makes it a perfect merging point of the sea and backwaters. Andhakaranazhi Beach
Located at a distance of 30 kms from Kochi, Andhakaranazhi Beach is an extension of the tiny village of Andhakaranazhi. The virgin beach is still noncommercialized and unexploited from tourism and a well-kept secret of the city. It is an azhy or a shoal which is a naturally formed ridge formed underwater and rises to the surface and is mostly used to regulate the inflow or outflow of water via two motor-operated shutters installed to the north and the south of the beach.
Also, its distance from the city makes it a perfect serene spot from the pell-mell of the city. You can find fishers at work, and their vast nets strewed all over the shores. Visit this to experience nature in its raw form with immaculate sands, clean waters and beautiful coastline. Water levels are erratic in the region and tourists are advised to be careful while exploring.

Vallarpadam Basilica
Located in the middle of Vallarpadam in Kerala, the Vallarpadam Church or the Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom is an ancient church and a very famous centre of pilgrimage in Kerala. It's one of the oldest European Churches in India which was built by the Portuguese Missionaries in the year 1524.
The church is dedicated to the Holy Mary of Vallarpadam which is commonly referred as 'Vallarapadath Amma'. Though, it ruined due to heavy flood in the year 1676 but it was reconstructed in the year 1676. Then in the year 1888, it was declared as a special church by Pope Leo XIII and later the Union Government stated it as a major pilgrim centre. The history says that Vallarpadath Amma has saved her devotees life several times from violent storms.

Marine Drive
